Matthew 5:17-20

Matthew 5:17-20

Jesus makes a big statement. He says “I have not come to abolish the law and the prophets but to fulfill them”. Jesus’ illustration using the pharisees and the teachers of the law would have stirred up some discussion for sure!

There can be a lot of discussion out there about old testament law and how that impacts us  Christians today. Jesus was pretty clear that He was not doing away with the law but rather He is fulfilling it. This should help us remain connected to the old testament and the laws we read about as believers today. Researching all the laws given in the old testament give us a greater glimpse of the fullness of what Jesus dying on a cross did for our sins. That fullness taken a step further is His resurrection through which the power of death was defeated for anyone who calls on the Name of Jesus.

We no longer have to look at the law as something that condemns us because Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment. He is sufficient in every area we fall short. He is our covering under every rule. We can learn a lot by recognizing how these dots connect.

SIDE NOTE: In the next few days of reading we see how Jesus actually takes the foundation of the law given in the old testament and builds on it with even greater levels of expectation for His followers.

God thank you for Jesus! Today I thank You for Your grace and Your love for me. I will never fully understand the depth of either on this side of eternity. Today I ask that You give me a fresh revelation of Your love and your grace. Let it fill me and overflow so that everyone I come into contact with today would wonder where my joy comes from. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen!
