Following His baptism, Jesus is led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tested by the devil. Jesus fasted forty days and forty nights before the devil came knocking.
The devil tempts Jesus by challenging Him to turn stones into bread, throw Himself from a high place to see if angels would protect Him, and by offering Him power in the form of ruling the kingdoms of the world. Jesus combats the temptations by quoting scripture. He says “It is written…”.
One important reason to spend time reading your bible regularly is because as you begin making those regular deposits of scripture into your own life you build a “balance” from which you can make withdraws. Jesus said over and over again “It is written…”.
Ultimately the devil had no defense for the authority of the word of God. You and I face trials, testing, temptation and various challenges everyday. The more familiar you become with your bible, the more often you can use the same defense Jesus did. When trials come, you can refer back and say ”It is written”. When temptation is knocking on your door you can refer back and say “It is written”. The bible shows us what God says about us, who He says we are, and teaches about the consistent nature of His character. Those are the most important weapons you have in fighting battles on a daily basis.
Prepare yourself now so that when problems come or the devil “comes knocking” you can stand with confidence and say “It is written”.
God thank you for Jesus! Today I pray that You would create in me a renewed hunger for Your word. I pray that You teach me and help me to remember that when trials and testing come I can fall back on Your word. Give me strength today. In Jesus Name I pray. Amen!
